Wikipedia defines framing as “a decorative edging for a picture, such as a painting or photograph, intended to enhance it and make it easier to display or protect it”. Framing is so much more than that, it is an art. It is a decoration, a way to perfectly preserve and display a favourite painting, print, photograph or even a sports jersey or memorable toy.

 

Some people are happy using off the shelf frames from Ikea or even Walmart to frame a standard sized photo. An engraved brass or aluminum plate is a more economical option while engraving and colour-filling the glass is an excellent choice for those with a larger budget.

 

Framing is very diverse. There are hundreds of moldings to choose from. They range from simple inexpensive frames to more costly elaborate moldings. The choices don’t end there. Once a frame has been chosen then there is a wide selection of mattes to pick from, budget friendly paper mattes to high end suede and textured mattes. One can get lost in the choices. Other decorative details can add that extra something to your custom framing project including a fillet which is essentially a frame within a frame. It is used as a border for a matte or added to a frame to create more depth.
